This is of course one parenting subject where there will always be some disagreement amongst experts and parents alike. Every parent wants to help their little baby sleep through the night but there are many different thoughts on which techniques are best for the child.

Here is some of the latest research…

Few parenting decisions are as fraught or as controversial as the choice parents make about how to get their baby to fall — and stay — asleep.

But a new Australian study may provide some reassurance to those who are trying to sleep train an infant. The study finds that there are no long-term emotional harms linked to two popular behavioral sleep interventions.

“Parents can feel confident using, and health professionals can feel confident offering, behavior techniques, such as ‘controlled comforting’ and ‘camping out’ for managing infant sleep,” claims the study, published online in the journal Pediatrics on Monday.

Researchers tracked 225 children who were enrolled in the study when they were 7 months old and experiencing sleep problems, through age 6. Half underwent some form of sleep training, either “controlled comforting” (often called “graduated extinction”) or so-called “camping out.”

Graduated extinction is essentially a modified cry-it-out method, in which parents let their babies cry and respond to them at increasing intervals in order to teach them to self-soothe. In camping out, parents sit or lay in their babies’ room and may pat or stroke them while they are in their crib, but do not feed or cuddle them to sleep. Gradually, parents move back from the crib and eventually out of the room.

Whereas a mom-blogger recently had this to say…

All parents have limits. Even the most patient, connected, attached parents can reach the point when they are ready to hurl themselves out of the window from sheer sleep-deprivation-induced insanity. Anybody who has me on their facebook friends list will know that recently I have been dealing with some serious nightwaking, and I admit that at times (always at 3am after the 6273647626th waking of the night) I have wondered whether I could continue in my efforts to never let my baby cry it out.

I know that our sleep issues will soon resolve themselves – in the meantime I am doing all I can to ensure I get enough rest to be able to cope with Squishy’s night time needs. I am so very glad that we stuck to our principles and refused to train him. My oldest son, Monkey, was also seemingly allergic to sleep in the first year of his life, and I am proud to say that he also was never left to cry himself to sleep, no matter how many times he awoke (it was a lot, by the way).

This difficult stage in our lives has really made me think about why I make the parenting choices that I make. During the recent height of Squishy’s sleepless stage (try saying that at speed when you’re sleep deprived) I read lots of books and online articles about babies and sleep, the majority of them by people who hold the same parenting philosophy as I do. However, it was the articles and books written by the CIO/Controlled Crying advocates that really cemented my belief that sleep-training babies is wrong

Source: http://www.alternative-mama.com/8-reasons-to-avoid-sleep-training-your-baby/

Of course, most of the complaints about baby sleep training techniques are for when there is use of the cry-it-out method in some form or another to help a baby sleep through the night. In The Baby Sleep Solution there are four major techniques that do not include any form of controlled crying and so parents are free to use the method that they think best suits them and their baby.

Why Won’t My Baby Sleep?

When it comes to looking after babies, there are no hard and fast rules. Each baby is different and individual, so it is generally up to the parent to find out the do’s and don’t by trial and error method or seek counseling from their pediatricians and relatives and act upon that.

Have you been asking yourself the question of Why Won’t My Baby Sleep? There could be

a number of reasons for this. Your baby may require some soothing and cuddling to go to sleep or want breastfeeding to comfort them. Some other babies may respond well to lullabies and rocking on the chair.

Generally, the sleeping pattern of babies may be highly erratic during the first six to twelve weeks, so this is one time you would have to be patient and alternate between feeding every two hours and catching up on your own sleep when your little one is sleeping!

Once your baby is around three months old, you may start seeing a set sleeping pattern. This depends a lot on how consistent and regular you keep the baby’s daily routine like the time of feeding, bath time, the nappy change patterns and finally set the sleeping patterns.

This regularising of your baby’s routine will help the baby to go to sleep automatically. Of course, this is a generalization. There will be times when your baby may just want that extra cuddling or nursing or even singing on your part and may not be ready to go to sleep yet.

On the other hand, if there is something troubling the baby like a gastric disturbance, it may not sleep. A colicky baby can be very restless and cry constantly. So, watch out for the symptoms and seek the help of your doctor if necessary.

You should set the tone for how your baby sleeps. If you get him or her into the habit of cuddling to you at night, then the baby may always want that before sleeping. On the other hand, if you train the baby to sleep separately right from the beginning, then he or she will go to sleep accordingly.

Sometimes, parents tend to allow their babies to sleep late in the afternoons, which may make it difficult for him or her to go to sleep at night. Again, how you train your baby’s daily routine plays a very major role here.

Constantly checking the baby for any diaper rashes, gas related problems, other health issues, burping the baby after every feed and then laying him down, keeping him clean and fresh and giving him teething rings when there is a biting urge can all greatly help in preventing infections, which in turn can help him or her to sleep well.

It should be noted here that babies are highly sensitive to their parent’s mood swings, so if you want to offer comfort and warmth, you yourselves should be in a calm and serene state of mind.

Ensure that your baby’s room is dim lighted and serene and without any disturbances from outside. Babies respond to sound very easily, so allow him or her sleep in a noise free environment and then, you may find the answer to your question of Why Won’t My Baby Sleep?

There is nothing more precious than those first few months when you hold your beautiful baby in your arms and rock her to sleep while you sing a lullabye. The moment when your baby’s breath becomes deep and even, you know your little bundle is soundly sleeping and can be transferred to her crib for a few precious hours of slumber.

As your baby gets older, however, you may begin to notice it is harder to get her to sleep, and she won’t get off to sleep on her own. Or you find your once soundly-sleeping child is awakening at night screaming, bed-wetting, or walking about your house. With children sleep problems can arise unexpectedly and can be troublesome to deal with at any point, for you and your child.

One of the most common sleep problems in children is separation anxiety. It happens mostly in older babies and toddlers. As they get sleepier, they begin to fight going to sleep longer because they know they will spend hours without you. This can lead to a lot of frustration at night when you are trying to get some sleep. Your child may begin to fall asleep, but as soon as you make the transfer to the crib they will awaken in tears. Otherwise, your child may sleep for a few hours, but during a natural night-time awakening become so worked up she is unable to soothe herself back to sleep. Both are frustrating problems, but can be overcome with some sleep training and a regular bedtime routine. As long as your child becomes secure in the knowledge that you aren’t leaving her for good, she will be able to sleep on her own. A regular bedtime routine will help soothe her and prepare her so she knows it is time to go to sleep, and you will be there when she awakens in the morning.

For more severe children sleep problems such as sleep terrors and sleep walking, there may be an underlying issue. Sleep terrors are different than nightmares in children. They can be frightening for parents to watch because your child will appear to be awake, but is confused and easily rattled. They are characterized by inconsolable screaming, which may last for a few seconds to several minutes. When they occur infrequently, there is no need for concern. When they are regular occurrences or when they begin to interfere with everybody’s quality of life, intervention by a child psychologist may be necessary. Sleep walking is very much like sleep terrors in that the child appears to be awake, but is really asleep and incoherent. They can be dangerous to the child because they are moving around while asleep, and can fall down stairs, walk out of the house, even cross streets and get lost. For children who sleep walk, it is sometimes necessary to put a lock, child gate or an alarm on a bedroom door to prevent injury. Both sleep terrors and sleep walking are more common in boys than in girls, and usually begin around age 6.

Children sleep problems are sometimes very trying to deal with. In most cases they are not severe, and don’t require any sort of medical intervention. In severe cases however, where they are impacting a child’s and a parent’s quality of life, intervention by a child psychiatrist may be necessary in order to get to the root of an underlying problem.

The most important thing to remember when trying to find a solution to getting your toddler to sleep is to work out the best one for you. Don’t think that there is one right answer when it comes to toddler sleep issues. Not all methods work with all children. It may take some time to find out what works for you, and it may not necessarily be what your friends or family agree with, but remember that it is your child and you ultimately know what is best.

If your child goes to bed well but wakes often through the night there may be several reasons for this. One could be hunger or thirst. They are still young and it is a long time to go without food or drink so you might want to give them something to eat or drink before bed to try to help. Also give them a beaker of water that doesn’t leak that they can have in bed with them so that they can help themselves to a drink and not necessarily have to fully wake up for it. They may wake because they want a cuddle. There is nothing wrong with this, and it is perfectly natural for your child to want to be near their parents. Some parents may find the best solution for them is to let the toddler come in their bed and sleep once they have woken up but this may not be the best idea as it can create a habit and the child will want to sleep in the parents bed every night. If you do decide this is the option for you though, once they get old enough to understand that you want them to stay in their bed, and that they are safe where they are, you can return them and be confident that they will be able to stay there and feel secure.

If you have difficulty in getting your child to sleep due to toddler sleep issues, you should as soon as possible establish a bedtime routine. It doesn’t matter what the routine is, but just a regular set of events that makes them realise that bedtime is coming up. This could include a bath, a drink of hot milk, brushing their teeth, a story, some songs or even watching a particular TV programme. The routine needn’t be too rigid as if you need to change it, that can be difficult, but make sure that there are a series of events that lead up to their bedtime. Once they are in bed you may need to sit with them until they go to sleep so that they feel safe and secure that you are there. Try to keep the room dark and quiet and don’t talk to them. If they try to get out of bed just gently put them back, and if they want a cuddle let them have one. As they get more used to going to bed you will be able to just sit on the side of the bed with no cuddles and gradually sit further and further away, or be in the next door room, until they get used to the idea that they are safe in their bed.

How Important is Sleep For Kids?

Sleeping is very important for everyone. As for your children, it is very important to instill to them the value of sleep as it helps the body to grow and for their brain to develop. Every living thing in this world sleeps – from the tiniest insects to the largest sea creatures. It enables one’s body to recharge itself to get moving for another day.

Sleeping is vital for kids, especially because they are in the development years. This is the time that they explore their surroundings; they are active and they move a lot to discover more things about themselves. Sleep can help them remember what they have learned from previous experiences. Also, sleep can let them focus and concentrate, as well as pay attention to details better.

For developing bodies, children needs sleep for bones and muscles to grow. Sleep can also aid in fixing injuries in the muscles and the skin. Having a recharged body and strong immune system, one can stay away from any illness.

That is why, encouraging your kids to sleep for a minimum of eight hours daily is a must! To equip themselves in everyday activities that can hone their optimum skills and potentials, they need to have a sound mind and body to learn and perform well.

Getting a routine down for sleep with a new baby is not an easy task for any parent. The first few weeks of a newborn baby’s life are wrought with worries for new parents, and sleep is no exception. By the time a baby has reached 6 weeks of age, they are getting into a more regular pattern for their sleep schedules. While some babies have been known to sleep through the night by 6 weeks of age, most will still wake every 3-4 hours at 6 weeks of age.

6 Week Old Baby Sleep

Overall, your 6 week old baby will sleep 14-15 hours per day, but it will be in 2-4 hour spurts, followed by 1-2 hours of awakening. Premature babies may tend to sleep a bit longer at a stretch, and babies which are colicky will typically sleep less, but overall will get in 14-15 hours of sleep throughout the day.

You may notice a fairly regular pattern in your baby’s sleep schedule by the time he reaches 6 weeks old. Baby is growing and reaching new milestones, and before you know it, your baby will finally be sleeping through the night.

Sleep deprivation in children can have serious and long term effects on the health and development of your child. Lack of sleep has been shown to cause reduced immunity which is very dangerous in young children who are highly susceptible to infections. It also slows down the mental, emotional and physical development in children.

The length of time that a child suffers sleep deprivation is critical in determining the severity of the effects.

Children who undergo extended periods of sleep deprivation have difficulties in learning and other activities that require concentration and focus. They tend to be extremely irritable and as such they have very poor social lives. These effects can sometimes go beyond adolescence and into adulthood if the deprivation is severe.

It is therefore in the best interest of every child to ensure that they get adequate sleep by providing the best possible sleeping conditions at all times.

When you have a baby, everything changes. Suddenly, the idea of a 30-minute nap is more exciting than watching your favourite reality-T.V. show. A typical Friday night is transformed from going to concert with your friends to singing sleep-inducing lullabies to your little one. Yoga classes are traded in for Mommy-and-Me classes, and your designer handbag becomes a fond memory that is replaced by a bulky, yet practical diaper tote.

Your sense of time also goes through a transformation. After baby, your idea of being proactive and forward-looking expands from counting down the days until the weekend, to starting to imagine what it will be like when your baby will first say “mamma”; when your baby will take his or her first steps; what activities your baby will grow up to excel at in high school; and how to ensure that you will have enough money saved up for your baby to pursue their choice of post-secondary education and career path.

An “eco-mom” in the making

As a new mom, you want the very best for your child, not just for today, but forever. If you worry about what the world will be like when your child is old enough to inherit it, join forces with the millions of people who practice environmentally-conscious living every day by becoming an “eco-mom”. Here are some easy ways for the new “eco-mom” in you to practice environmentally-friendly habits and minimize your mommy footprint.

Try gently used items

Instead of buying all new clothes, bottle sterilizers, baby monitors, mobiles and toys for your baby, consider buying gently used items. If the idea of buying second-hand items for your baby from an unknown source makes you uncomfortable, start a gently used sharing club with your friends and family. As your friends’ babies grow, you can take on items they no longer need—good for the environment, and good for your wallet too.

Leave the mini van in the garage and walk

If you live close to a plaza where you do your daily errands like banking and shopping, consider leaving your car at home and walking instead. You save on fuel emissions and the cost of gas, and the exercise and fresh air are good for you and for baby!

Consider reducing diaper damage

Cloth over disposable diapers? The environmental impact of both is a long-debated issue by parents. Both options have their merits, but disposable diapers are probably the easier option for busy moms, resulting in a huge amount of disposable diapers in landfills every year.

If you’re not quite ready to make the switch to cloth diaper but are still committed to minimizing your mommy footprint, think about using fewer baby wipes (which also contribute to landfill overload) and try making your own reusable wipes by cutting soft cotton fabric into squares for reusable wipes, or even just using half of a disposable wipe for small clean ups.

Bring reusable cloth shopping bags to the store

Having a baby means more trips to the store for food, necessities and cleaning products. Using reusable bags is a great way to reduce your mommy footprint by cutting down on plastic bags. Another easy tip is to bring along your own reusable plastic containers, so that you can avoid extra Styrofoam and plastic packaging at the deli and bakery counters.

Switch to reusable containers

Being a new mom means having a “mommy tote” full of essentials like bottles, snacks, drinks, clothes, blankets—plus extra items for emergencies. Try using reusable containers for storing baby’s drinks and food to help reduce your reliance on disposable plastics. You can also buy food and drink items in bulk and transfer them to your reusable containers to cut down on plastic packaging.

Choose organic ingredients

When you buy products made from organic ingredients, you enhance your baby’s health and safety, and also protect groundwater, farmers and wildlife.

Lately, I have been painting my nails almost every few days. A little obsessed? Definitely. For someone that constantly wants to dye her hair or completely change her style day-to-day, this is the perfect alternative. One of my favorite places to go for nail-spiration is my friend Ally’s blog, Nail in the Coffee. She is always coming up with wonderfully unique nail designs, like her popular Beer Bottle Nails or her 24 Karat Gold Manicure (we’re talking real 24 karat gold, ladies). To this day, I aspire to master her Galaxy Nails.

We are very excited to share that Ally will be posting more nail tutorials on Pretty Prudent, starting with this easy-peasy Springing into Summer Nail Art Tutorial. Grab your friends and try them out!

a 2.5year old that has developed a sudden fear of the ducted heating….. yep thats right the ducted bloody heating!!!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

so DD has, for the last week and a bit, started screaming everytime the heating goes on when she is in bed, and the vent is on the other side of the room!

we dont understand whats going on, its not noisy just your typical ducted heating vent.

we have tried telling her its windy to help the birds fly- no go
we have gotten her to feel it and touch it and she is fine with that but if she is in her bed and it comes on all hell breaks loose.
ive told her its there to keep her warm so she doesnt get cold when she is asleep and she says " oh ok" and then it comes on and BAM the issues start!

its getting cold here so theres no way i can keep it off because we will all freeze but im at a loss as to how to get her to understand its ok.

has anyone else has this?

i dont want to ignore the problem or her, and last night and this morning i tried the "yes the heaters on but we cant turn it off" approach and made less of a deal, i acknowledged the problem but kept things simple rather than being excessively sympathetic to keep the fuss away but again it made no difference

HELP!
